Press Release
"About 20 million Americans (20 to 25 percent of workers) perform shift work. Most shift workers get less sleep over 24 hours than day workers. Sleep loss is greatest for night shift workers, those who work early morning shifts, and female shift workers with children at home. About 60 to 70 percent of shift workers have difficulty sleeping and/or problem sleepiness."

NIH Publication No. 97-4071

Sleep Consultants, Inc. is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and it was the first accredited sleep center in Tarrant County (1985).

He treats you like you're in the highest-rated hotel. The only thing missing is a cookie on the pillow. Thanks for all your concern for my health." Billie Brownlee, April 2010

Benefits of treatment

"I have magical dreams now. I dreamed I was in heaven with my father." Cindy Whitworth, October 2009

"My pulmonologist, Dr. Stuart McDonald first mentioned sleep studies during my physical in March. The appointment was made, he explained the basic concepts of the study, and I reluctantly said okay.

The first night, I was turning around to leave in cold, rainy weather. As a man opened the door, he introduced himself and explained the basic procedure as he introduced me to the Sleep Lab. He showed me where I would be sleeping and asked if I wanted a cup of coffee. Having never turned down coffee in my life, I accepted. Later, a nurse/technician came in and was so polite I couldn't be rude to her. About 8:30 she started wiring me up, and by 9:00 I was in the bed knowing I would never be able to sleep. To my surprise, I slept all night and had to be awakened. For the second night, I found myself 'kind of' looking forward to going back. Same deal, I felt more relaxed. It was good that it was the same people. After these tests were run, I had my first meeting with Dr. Watenpaugh. In our visit he showed me graphs of the testing, including one or two places where, if my memory serves me right, one minute to one and a half minutes, I was not breathing. I absolutely did not want to believe him, but reluctantly I agreed to give CPAP a try. I fought the mask, off and on, hating every minute of it, and thoroughly convinced that I could never accept it. However, as time went on, I began to adjust. I started to feel more refreshed. I did not have to stagger into the bathroom every morning to splash water on my face. I felt better and better. This is September 7, 2009, and I am even looking forward to going to bed at night knowing how I will feel in the morning. This may all be in my head, but it even seems that my memory is much better. I still have some trouble remembering, but hope that in time it improves even more. Show this letter to anyone you might feel would benefit from it (especially if you can find a man more stubborn than I, which I doubt!)." Phil Prescott, September 2009

“I don’t know how long I’ve had sleep apnea.  My friends in college called me ‘Rip Van Watenpaugh’!  I’ve been on treatment now for 12 years, and it’s helped me a lot.

As a sleep medicine specialist, using treatment also helps me help others:  I draw on my experiences as a patient every day.”

From other doctors

"Your efforts reflect commitment to the growth of the field of sleep disorders medicine. Congratulations on what you and your colleagues have accomplished." Sarah Neely, MD, Director of Policy and Professional Standards, American Academy of Sleep Medicine, July 2007

"You have a fine program." Lowery Thompson, MD, May 2007

"I think your sleep evaluation and treatment services are exceptional. They are comprehensive, understanding of patient needs, and include excellent follow-up to me as the referring physician. I have used other labs in the area but have not been happy with their services." Marie Kelly, MD, March 2007

Comparison to other sleep clinics

"The previous sleep clinic I went to was like a factory. They just ran people through. There was no real contact with a doctor. You were issued CPAP and that was it. There was no follow-up. Sleep Consultants has been a much better experience. There's a big difference." Harold Price, January 2010

"At the other place I went, I never saw a doctor. Nobody ever met with me to discuss the study results. I was never really comfortable there. Dr. Burk's office and lab have been very proactive and attentive about helping me use CPAP and making sure it's working right." Emilie Varnell, November 2009
