Sleep Consultants, Inc. welcomes
Donald E. Watenpaugh, Ph.D.
to the practice of Sleep Medicine
Don Watenpaugh is a scientist and sleep
specialist with training, interests, expertise, and research activity in
environmental toxicology, cardiovascular physiology, endocrinology,
neurophysiology, environmental physiology, and exercise. His research to date
produced 90 publications, 143 abstracts, and 1 patent. Dr. Watenpaugh also has
extensive teaching experience, both in the formal classroom and in the
laboratory. His awards include a Pickwick Fellowship from the National Sleep
Foundation.
Dr. Watenpaugh graduated from the University of North Texas, Denton, with a B.S.
in 1982 and a M.S. in 1984, both in biology. His interests in space science led
him to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (1984-1989), where he
contributed to the first systematic description of how the cardiovascular system
acclimates to weightlessness. Dr. Watenpaugh’s work at Southwestern also led to
a M.A. in physiology. From 1989 to 1996, Dr. Watenpaugh managed the Space
Physiology Laboratory at NASA Ames Research Center, CA. Their research team
developed methods to counteract debilitating effects of spaceflight so
astronauts may safely return to Earth. He earned his Ph.D. in physiology in 1995
from University of California, Davis. After a sabbatical at the Danish Aerospace
Medical Centre for Research in Copenhagen, Denmark, Dr. Watenpaugh joined the
Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of North Texas Health
Science Center, Fort Worth (1996-2000). There he studied relationships between
sleep and cardiovascular function. From 2000 to 2004, Dr. Watenpaugh worked at
the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory, Groton, CT, where he studied
environmental physiology of submariners and divers.
